March 4th, 2017 Youth Hunt at McDowell Hunting Preserve.

On Saturday March 4th, we had a windy, but wonderful day working with a group of young hunters out at McDowell Hunting Preserve in Grand Island. For some of these youngsters, it was their first time hunting, and even shooting. Each youth hunt begins with a hunting safety discussion and quiz. This Saturday we were fortunate to have Frank Cambra give each hunter some shooting guidance as they practiced at a 5 stand sporting clays station. This exercise can make a big difference in helping someone develop proper shooting skills. We are fortunate to have such support from Mike McDowell, at McDowell Hunting Preserve. Please check them out by clicking the image link below.

March 26, 2016 Youth Hunt at McDowell Hunting Preserve

On March 26th, we held a Youth Hunt at Mike McDowell’s hunting preserve. Our chapter arranged the event and covered nearly half of the costs, bringing the price of a 3 chukar hunt with lunch,  down to $25 per person. We had 9 youth hunters with family and relatives come out for the hunt, and it was a great success! It was a great day, sunny with a slight breeze making the dogs very happy. The event began with safety rule reviews from our Youth Coordinator, and Hunter Safety Instructor’s Mike and Kim Mullins.  The participants then got a great warm up with proper shooting form, and further gun safety instruction on skeet prior to entering the field. After a great 2-3 hours of chasing and bagging chukar we had lunch and then some of the participants were taught how to clean their birds.  After all that everyone still had the energy for several rounds of  youth and adult 5-stand sporting clays. We owe a big hand to Mike McDowell and his wife at McDowell Hunting Preserve and all our participants and chapter members. http://www.mcdowellestate.com/McDowell_Hunting_Preserve.html

CDFW Youth Pheasant Hunt at Yolo Bypass Wildlife Area Nov. 21st, 2015

On November 21st several Chapter Members were on hand to help with the CDFW’s Youth Pheasant Hunt at Yolo Bypass Wildlife Area. Our members helped by providing bird dogs, safety instruction, and general guidance to over 20 young hunters split between a morning and afternoon session, to make this year’s Youth hunt a resounding success. I’d like to thank all our members who came out and especially our members Mike and Kim Mullins for spearheading and organizing this effort! Also special thanks to Susan Edginton for taking these great photos. More of her work can be seen at https://sedginton.smugmug.com/

Chapter Members build Wheel Chair Accessible Duck Blind at Yolo Bypass Wildlife Area.

In September, about 10 of our Chapter members got out on a Wednesday and Saturday to complete a wheelchair accessible duck blind in the Yolo Bypass wildlife area.  The project was spearheaded by Mike and Kim Mullins some time earlier. Mike built a steel frame, and he and others anchored it earlier in the week, and then got together again with a bigger crew on a Saturday to build a redwood ramp and deck , rails, benches, mobile tule groups for the deck and to cover the perimeter rails with tules.  The teams efforts are incredible as you can see by the photos below. Thanks to Mike Mullins, Kim Mullins, Larry Edginton, John Emmond, Steve Mullins, Rob Trow and Reese, Roberto Tejeda, Keith (Buck) and Greg Schoonveld.
